Netflix Is Making a Show Set in the Adirondacks. They Want North Country People in It.
Netflix is adapting Liz Moore's bestselling mystery novel The God of the Woods into a drama series — and they want residents of the North Country in it.
The show is set at a fictional summer camp in the Adirondacks in the 1970s. The story centers on the Van Laar family, wealthy owners of the camp, and is driven by the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl and its connection to a family tragedy years earlier.
Production is scheduled to begin June 1 and run through October 1, primarily filming in the Hudson Valley. The casting team is actively seeking background actors with authentic Upstate New York and North Country accents — people who sound like they actually grew up here.
The Cast
Netflix has now announced the full principal cast.
Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) and Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin, Train Dreams) lead the series. Condon plays Alice Van Laar — hardened by grief, trapped in a failing marriage, and forced to face the unimaginable when her 13-year-old daughter goes missing.
Damon Gupton (The Big Door Prize, Bates Motel) plays Denny Hayes, a Bureau of Criminal Investigation captain navigating a complicated new partnership. Ella Rubin (The Idea of You) plays Louise Donnadieu, a working-class camp counselor whose life unravels when one of her campers disappears.
Susannah Perkins (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) plays T.J. Hewitt, the quietly commanding director of Camp Emerson. Benjamin Walker (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) plays Peter Van Laar III — imposing, entitled, and humorless — the wealthy heir to the Van Laar estate.
Nell Fisher (Stranger Things, Evil Dead Rise) plays Barbara Van Laar, a headstrong teenager with a punk sensibility who joins the camp seeking refuge from her family. And Autumn Molina (A Really Haunted Loud House) plays Tracy Jewell, a determined young camper who makes it her mission to find her missing bunkmate.
The production is still looking for one more thing: real North Country faces and real North Country voices. Yours might be one of them.
How to Apply
The casting office is looking for background actors of all ages who live in or grew up in Upstate New York or the North Country. The production is especially interested in actors with familiarity with, or accents native to, the North Country region. If you say across as acrost or add the before street names, you might fit the bill. No acting experience is required.
Email a headshot, resume, and reel if available to srathecasting@gmail.com. Confirm your availability between June 1 and October 1 and note any scheduling conflicts.
The God of the Woods is executive produced by Liz Hannah (The Girl from Plainville) and author Liz Moore.
