Heads Up: The Lake Placid Marathon Is Today. Here's What's Closed and When.
If you're driving anywhere near Lake Placid this morning, plan around it. The 21st annual Lake Placid Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K runs today, Sunday June 14, with nearly 1,500 racers expected between the three events. The 8am start and 2pm cutoff mean the impact runs through the middle of the day.
Start and finish are at the Olympic Speedskating Oval on Main Street. Runners loop clockwise around Mirror Lake, then head out Route 73 toward River Road and back.
The closures (Sunday, 8am to 2pm):
Main Street — closed between Town Hall and Mirror Lake Drive (High Peaks Resort) from 7:45 to 8:30am.
Mirror Lake Drive — closed from Parkside to Northwood Road, 8 to 8:45am; expect delays elsewhere along it.
Parkside Drive — closed Mirror Lake Dr to Morningside Dr, 8:15 to 9am (local traffic permitted, use caution).
Morningside Drive — closed 8:15 to 9am from Parkside to the Routes 86/73 intersection, where delays should be expected until 9am.
Route 73 (Sentinel/Cascade Road) — runners confined to the northbound lane between the John Brown Farm/Sentinel Road intersection and River Road, with southbound traffic metered (alternating one-way) through the day.
No overnight parking was allowed on Main Street from Central Garage to Cummings Road; parking resumes Sunday at 8:30am.
Getting to or from Keene: The detour is in effect 8am to 2pm. From Main Street, take Cummings Road, left on WesValley Road, right on Mill Pond Drive, left on Old Military Road, and on to Route 73, where alternating single-lane traffic runs between there and River Road near the Olympic ski jumps.
Bottom line: If you don't need to be in downtown Lake Placid between 8 and 9am, wait. Most closures lift by mid-morning, but Route 73 stays metered until the 2pm cutoff. Organizers ask drivers to expect delays and use extra caution — and if you've got a free morning, Main Street near the oval is a good spot to cheer the runners in.
