Happy Memorial Day from Tri-Lakes Town Square
To everyone in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, and the communities in between — happy Memorial Day. And thank you to every veteran and military family in the Tri-Lakes.
To everyone in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, and the communities in between — happy Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is not a day off. It is a day of remembrance. First observed on May 30, 1868 — originally called Decoration Day — the holiday was created to honor Union soldiers killed in the Civil War. After World War I it expanded to honor all Americans who died in military service. In 1971 Congress made it a federal holiday on the last Monday of May.
In the Tri-Lakes, that remembrance is personal. This is a region shaped by its veterans. The American Legion, the VFW, the VFW Auxiliary — these organizations are woven into the fabric of every community here. The flags placed at Pine Ridge Cemetery and St. Bernard’s Cemetery this weekend by VFW Auxiliary Post 3357 and local Girl Scout troops are one small example of what that looks like in practice.
Today, parades step off in Saranac Lake at 10:45am and Lake Placid at 11am. Tupper Lake holds its ceremony at 11am at Veterans Memorial Park. If you can, go.
Tri-Lakes Town Square will be here through the holiday weekend covering what matters to this community. The same as always — free, without a paywall, without a corporate owner.
Thank you to every veteran and military family in the Tri-Lakes. And thank you to the readers who have found this platform and made it worth building.
